How to choose an organic mattress without getting lost

The word “organic” is a starting point, not a complete evaluation. Use this five-part framework to compare products on evidence and fit.

1. Check what is certified

Ask whether a certification covers a raw material, component, factory or finished mattress. GOTS is the key organic textile standard when a brand claims a finished textile product is organic. GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE and EWG VERIFIED address different criteria.

2. Read the whole materials list

Common components include organic cotton, organic wool, latex and steel coils. Waterproof crib products may use additional materials. Do not assume every model has the same construction.

  • Comfort layers and thickness
  • Support core
  • Fire-standard approach
  • Adhesives and waterproofing

3. Match construction to your preferences

Firmness labels are not standardized. Body size, sleep position and existing preferences influence how a mattress feels.

A certification can help you understand what you are buying. It cannot choose your preferred feel for you.

4. Read the policy before paying

Check the trial length, minimum-use period, return costs, pickup process, geographic limits and warranty exclusions.

5. Compare value, not just price

Compare exact size, construction, certification and policy. Premium materials do not automatically make a mattress right for your budget.
